There’s no shortage of life lessons that Loyola College Prep gave to Timothy Horton ’02. But he is proof that the school pillar of service to others has impacted him way beyond his graduation.
Horton served in the United States Marine Corps for 12 years. But after his receiving an honorable discharge, “I still felt the need to serve others and joined the Department of Defense Police force,” Horton says. “I still believe in volunteer work and helping those less fortunate than you.”
While at the school, Horton was a key member of the basketball team (he's one of the school's top 30 career scorers), but was also involved in many clubs and organizations. And when it came to showing school spirit, you could always count on him.
“That’s what I liked most about Loyola was the school spirit,” he says. “Everyone who went there was a huge fan of every competitive sport Loyola participated in. Every game the student sections would be packed and very loud. There was a serious pride of belonging that we felt representing Loyola College Prep!”
Horton served at the White House Military Office as a Presidential Guard during the George W. Bush administration. He also had extensive travel as a Marine in places such as Japan, The Philippines, South Korea, Germany, Turkey, Panama, Mongolia, and Singapore.
Plus, he was able to continue his basketball career by being selected to represent the Marine Corps against other branches of service. He was also recently hired as the Head Girls’ Basketball Coach at St. Michael the Archangel High School in the Washington D.C. area.
“Loyola has impacted my life greatly,” Horton says. “To current students I would say be patient with yourselves and enjoy all the experiences you can. Get better little by little and set goals for yourself. Do not forget your upbringing and no matter what life throws at you keep on pushing. High school is just the beginning; prepare yourself because an adventure awaits!”
