The Flyer of the Year award is the highest achievement a student can receive at Loyola. The Flyer of the Year is chosen by the faculty and given to the student who best shows the qualities that reflect Loyola's mission and is a man or woman for others in every sense. The finalists this year included Emily Anrson, Eli Baker, Maggie Googe, McCullough Lawson, Millicent Mascagni, and Collier White.
The 2024 Flyer of the Year is Maggie Googe.
“Maggie is such a great example of what it means to be named Flyer of the Year,” said John LeBlanc, Loyola Principal. “She is involved in her school, church and community. She is a great student, and has a passion and talent for the Spanish language. She is kind and humble and caring for others. She is someone who represents all three pillars of our school, and we are so proud of Maggie.”
In her four years at Loyola, Maggie has earned several academic, athletic, and student involvement positions and awards. She was a Student of the Year finalist and the winner of the Ray Riser award that recognizes the female athlete who best exemplifies Loyola's competitive spirit, fairness, loyalty, sportsmanship, and the true spirit of Loyola Athletics. Maggie was a member of the girls soccer team all four years and was a starter on the 2022 girls soccer team that won the state championship.
“My favorite thing about being a Loyola student is the small community we have here,” she said. “Just being surrounded by everybody who knows everybody makes it really feel like family. It has been great to be involved in things outside of school as well. It helped me apply what I learned here to other places and help my community.”
She was also involved in Student Government all four years and was in the National Honor Society for the last two years. Maggie has a servant’s heart and is involved in her church and has participated in mission trips and volunteer work in our community. She is a talented singer and sings in the church youth band. In addition to these activities, she studied Spanish in Panama during her summer vacation in hopes to further her education, language skills, and knowledge of the culture.
Maggie truly lives up to the Jesuit motto of being a man or woman for others. She is kind, humble, and well respected and liked by her peers and teachers.
As a part of our tradition, the Flyer of the Year always receives the first yearbook.
